Abstract
The prevalence of polydipsia and water intoxication in chronic psychiatric patients is one to five percent. These psychiatric patients have polydipsia and polyuria without identifiable underlying medical causes. Hyponatremia develops in some cases and can progress to water intoxication with such symptoms as confusion, lethalgy, psychosis and sezures or death. Therefore the prompt recognition and proper management of patients with this problem are very important aspects of psychiatric care. We report a case of schizophrenic patient with polydipsia and hyponatremia and review associated literatures.
